The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, in Guatemala is an incredible fusion of ancient Maya traditions and Catholicism that celebrates and honors friends and family that have departed from this earth.  Although All Saints Day is sacred, the atmosphere at the Big Kite festival is full  of life and celebration.

ACTIVITIES

 

-Celebrate the Day of the Dead by observing Maya traditional Dia de los Muertos customs of decorating gravestones with flowers, food and personal relics, flying small kites and and raising the enormous kites that have to be seen to be believed

-Visit Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is famous for its ancient Maya ruins and incredible biodiversity

-Visit a working coffee plantation near Antigua for the story behind your favorite morning wake up brew

-Volcano climbing (you can rent a horse for an additional fee paid directly to local horse guide, not included in BGT package)

 

-Tour the cobbled streets of Antigua, a World Heritage Site, renowned for its colonial architecture and graceful charm

-Tour Lake Atitlan, the largest lake in Central America and one of the most beautiful in the world.  Visit Maya women weavers and learn about the rebirth of their ancient textile traditions that are treasured throughout the world
